Academy of Medicine of N.J. records include by-laws, minutes, annual reports, correspondence and agreements with the Newark Public Library, financial records, membership lists, yearly programs, Graduate Week education programs, and historical information. Records of the N.J. State Commission on National Defense, Medical Section, which secured officers for the Medical Reserve Corps during WWI, include correspondence of the chairman (Dr. Gordon K. Dickinson), and a New Jersey county medical census of physicians, which includes their vital statistics and professional information. Records of medical organizations include financial records and correspondence of the Essex County Pathological and Anatomical Society, 1947-1962, and minutes of: the Essex Medical Union, 1859-1878; the Physicians' Club of Newark, 1916-1924; the New Jersey Academy of Medicine, 1874-1879; and the Newark Medical Association, 1856-1892. Physicians' papers include: casebook (1865-1900) of J. Henry Clark, N.Y. Medical Examiner, who examined discharged Civil War soldiers, and a notebook on temperance; a pharmacopoeia of Gertrude Watson (ca. 1898); notes on Prof. T. Gaillard Thomas's lectures on gynecology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1872-1873), including details of over 40 cases; a two-volume record of goiter cases (1931-1936); instructional materials on gastro-intestinal studies (ca. 1932); and scrapbooks and writings (1887-1937) of Dr. John F. Hagerty. Also, student notebooks, casebooks and pharmacopoeias of Alex Dougherty, Jr. (1859-1870), J.J.H. Love (1890s), William Clay Wallace (1850s) and A.W. Woodhull (1850s-60s).

Montclair, N.J. (Essex County) physician, John J.H. Love (1833-1897), joined the Civil War first as a colonel in the 3rd Regiment Essex Brigade, and later (1862-64) as a surgeon in the 13th New Jersey Volunteers. He served at the battles of Antietam Creek, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cumberland Gap and Williamsburg.
